‘Action’ against policemen for attending US Consulate’s iftar

Police chief Javed had directed 8 officers to submit explanations for attending US Consulate's iftar.

Pakistan’s Punjab provincial government on Tuesday recommended “disciplinary action” against some senior police officers for attending an iftar hosted by the US Consulate without permission.

Acting on the direction of PML-N Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif,Punjab Police chief Javed Iqbal had directed eight officers to submit written explanations for attending the US Consulate’s iftar held last week.

A source in the police department said Iqbal had described the responses furnished by the officers as “unsatisfactory” and submitted his report to the Chief

Minister.

“The Punjab government,acting on the police chief’s report,has recommended disciplinary action against the officers,” the source said.

Iqbal had directed the officers to explain their position on attending the event hosted by the US Consulate “without getting approval from authorities concerned”.

He had said the government does not allow any government official to attend any function or ceremony at a foreign mission without permission.

DIGs Khadim Hussain Bhatti,Ghulam Dogar and Arif Nawaz,SSPs Sheharyar and Muhammad Ali Nekokara and SPs Rommel Akram and Waqasul Hassan were among the officials who attended the iftar at the residence of Carmella Conroy,Principal Officer of the US Consulate.

One of the officials who attended the event,that they had not done “anything wrong” by joining an iftar dinner.

The PML-N has adopted a strong anti- American stance since the covert US raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in May,and the Chief Minister recently announced that his government would not accept any development aid from the US.
