The Haryana government promoted two senior IPS officers to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) on Tuesday. ADGP Alok Mittal, who is currently heading the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), and ADGP Arshinder Singh Chawla, Director of the Haryana Police Academy (HPA) at Madhuban in Karnal, have been elevated.
Mittal, a 1993-batch IPS officer, was appointed as the ACB ADGP in December 2024, succeeding Amitabh Singh Dhillon. At the time, he was serving as head of the Haryana government’s intelligence agency, CID, a role he held for over four years and seven months.
Prior to that, he was on central deputation with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for more than five years. His career includes significant assignments such as SP in the CBI’s Economic Offences Wing and Cyber Crime Cell, Commissioner of Police at Gurgaon, IGP Rohtak range, SSP of Rohtak, Panipat, and Faridabad and SP Panchkula.
Mittal, who joined the Haryana cadre in 1993, has specialised in policing, crime investigation, and road safety. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Roorkee in 1990 and later pursued a postgraduate diploma in cyber laws from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, in 2010–11.
Chawla has also been promoted to the rank of DGP in the level-16 pay matrix between Rs 2.05 lakh and Rs 2.24 lakh. In 2022, he received an appreciation letter from the state government for his exemplary leadership and contribution to the planning, coordination, and execution of the ERSS/Dial-112 project, launched in July 2021 to ensure timely emergency services for citizens. Chawla was earlier awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2009 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2020.
Since joining the IPS in 1993, Chawla has served in diverse roles, including as an international police officer in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo between 2003 and 2004.
He is the only officer from Haryana to have won the IPS Association’s “Sword of Honour” from the National Police Academy, Hyderabad.
His academic achievements include a Master’s in Police Management from Osmania University and a Master’s in Human Rights from Pondicherry University. He has also published five papers, one at an international conference and four at the national level.
