2010 Games organisers asked to practice austerity

The 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee announced that they would travel in economy class to be in sync with the Centre's austerity drive.

A day after the 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee announced that they would travel in economy class to be in sync with the Centre8217;s austerity drive, sources revealed that it came after a Sports Ministry instruction to shun extravagance.

Organising Committee OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi told reporters on Wednesday that the OC officials would travel by economy class and the proposed AR Rehman show at the Indian Gate to mark 8216;one year to go8217; for the Games has also been cancelled as part of the austerity drive.

The cultural programme at the Trafalgar Square after the Queens Baton Relay handing over ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London on October 29 has also been canceled.

Sources said that it was a Sports Ministry instruction that led to the OC to cut the frills.

8220;The Sports Ministry directed the OC to take the barest minimum delegation for the QBR in England. In fact, they have asked for list of officials who would be going for the event. There is no place for the near and dear ones,8221; a source said.

8220;Initially,the OC was planning to have a jumbo contingent but the Ministry has made it clear that only those whose presence is required would be allowed to travel to England,8221; he added.

8220;The Sports Ministry felt the OC can do without the AR Rahman show. There is no scope for such extravaganza. And OC was asked to ensure that its officials travel by economy class only,8221; he added.
