VIJAYAWADA, JULY 29: Tension gripped Guntur following the murder of a Christian priest this evening.
According to preliminary information, some unidentified persons entered the Lutheran Church premises in the city and stabbed Rev. Gangavarapu Emmanuel,60, President of Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church, which has jurisdiction over 12 districts in the state.
A profusely bleeding Emmanuel was rushed to the Guntur Government Hospital. But he died on the way. Police said he was on his way to take lunch when the trio accosted him and stabbed him with a knife.
As the news of the murder spread like wild fire, hundreds of Christians gathered at the hospital.
The entire police force in Guntur district has been put on alert and special striking police pickets posted at all vulnerable points.
Police said situation in the town was tense but under control. All shops in the area downed their shutters, anticipating trouble.
A bomb explosion in a mosque here allegedly set off by Deendar Anjuman activists on June 25 had led to large scale rioting in which property worth more than Rs two crore was destroyed.
