CHANDIGARH, Oct 5: With many cases of dengue reported from neighbouring areas, the city has not witnessed any such case in its hospitals.
However, with the monsoon season on its way out, the city doctors have a word of advice for the residents to keep dengue at bay. Dr S.C. Verma of Department of Internal Medicine at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, says, quot;The carrier of this disease is Aedes aegyptia mosquito and the most important thing is to prevent it from breeding. For this, people should take care not to leave any stored water for too long or allow any stagnant water to collect.8221;
The initial symptoms of dengue are headache, body ache and fever. There is a drop in the platelets of blood, which might lead to dengue haemorrhagic fever. quot;In DHF, if the platelet level drops, a platelet transfusion is required. In acute cases, patients might start bleeding from the skin and other parts as well. If timely medical help is not sought, this can prove fatal,quot;says Dr Verma.
