It will be some more time before Prakash Amritraj makes his return to competitive tennis. Surgery on his left wrist during the US Open meant the 24-year-old missed this year8217;s Mumbai Open, and while it was November8217;s Challenger tournaments in Delhi that were originally his target, it now seems next year8217;s Chennai Open will be where he would begin his climb back up the rankings.

8220;Yes, I was hoping to make it to India at least for the second week of the Challenger, but I think my wrist will take some more time to heal,8221; said Prakash, speaking to The Indian Express from Los Angeles. Instead, he will be coming to India in the middle of December for the hometown tournament, after spending some time with the family.

Metal pins were inserted into his wrist during the surgery as a precaution, and since these were removed only a few days back, things are slowly returning to normal as far as his training is concerned. 8220;My hand was in a cast, but I have been working out in the meantime, making sure my upper body is fit. I8217;m in good shape at the moment and will continue training hard before it8217;s time to play again,8221; he said.

The surgery came as a setback as it interrupted a fine run of results, but Prakash is determined to pick up from where he left it off. 8220;It came at a bad time because I was playing well. But I gained a lot of confidence from the way I was playing at that time, and I felt I belonged with the other Tour-level players. The kind of confidence I got then will certainly help when I start playing again.8221;

And, of course, there is no better place than home to begin his return. 8220;I can think of no better place to start playing again than Chennai. My main focus would definitely be the singles, but I would probably be playing the doubles as well. I hope I8217;ll have a good run there and then move on to the Australian Open.8221;
