Powergrid Corporation, which holds the dual charge of both building transmission lines and scheduling power despatch in the country, today synchronised northern grid with the central grid.

This interconnection, made through the Tala transmission system, is envisaged to bring power from east, the north-east and even Bhutan into both the western and northern regions in a synchronous mode. While the southern grid — comprising Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu — are yet to be synchronised with the rest, the present move would enable smooth load operations of all other regions by treating them as one grid.

The present formation created through the Tala link, developed through a joint venture between the Tatas and the Powergrid, would have 250 power plants with a capacity of 88,000 mw operating in a synchronised manner.
