PUNE, August 27: Veteran freedom fighter and Marathi journalist Dattatray Shankar alias Dadasaheb Potnis died at a private hospital this morning. He was 89 and is survived by a son and a daughter.

Dadasaheb Potnis, founder editor of Nashik-based Marathi Gaokari, was born in 1909 at Vai in Satara district. Potnis started weekly Gaokari in 1936. It was later converted into a daily. He also set up Amrut, the first Marathi digest, and Rasrang, the first Marathui cine magazine.
