A portion of the 100-year-old Maharashtra Housing 038; Area Development Agency MHADA owned Chowgade building in Mukhwada lane collapsed on Tuesday morning leading to panic among the residents.

At around 9:50 am a portion of the second floor of the building collapsed. Though around 33 families live in the building, there were no casualties reported. Residents alleged that internal repair work conducted by a ground floor tenant caused the accident.

8220;There is a wheat grinding shop on the ground floor. The owner of the shop was carrying out some repair work due to which the wooden beams supporting the building got disturbed. We think that is what triggered the accident,8221; said Prakash Verma, a resident of the second floor of the building.

8220;It all happened very suddenly. One minute the floor was there and the next minute it had given way. Some of our belongings got damaged but thankfully no person was injured, by sheer luck no one was present near the site when the accident occurred,8221; added Verma.

MHADA officials said that they will soon carry out repair work for the building. 8220;This is an old structure supported by wooden beams. The beams had been corroded and this caused the accident. We have evacuated the building and will carry on a detailed inspection of the place after which we will carry on the repair work of the building,8221; said a MHADA engineer present at the side on condition of anonymity.
