Woman sets self on fire
In what appears to be a case of matrimonial discord, one Sundari 32 burnt herself and her nine-year-old daughter, Devi, in Roshanpura in the Najafgarh area on Tuesday afternoon. Sundari, and her husband Vinod, who had been married for the past 10 years, reportedly used to fight often. On Monday night, Sundari8217;s uncle reportedly visited the couple to help resolve their differences. Around 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday morning, Vinod went to see him off at the bus stand. In their absence, Sundari allegedly burnt herself and her daughter after dousing themselves with kerosene. Both of them suffered 100 per cent burns. While Devi was dead by the time she was brought to the hospital, Sundari died at around 3.30 p.m.

One arrested, 6 cases solved
With the arrest of a 26-year-old man in Azadpur, the police claim to have solved six cases of robbery and dacoity, which occurred mainly in the Gurgaon area. The accused, Ashok alias Sachi, a resident of Bulundshaher UP, was nabbed by the homicide team following a tip-off, sources said. On interrogation, he reportedly revealed the name of three other associates Bijinder, Major Laddan and Gaffar. In January this year, the four had allegedly looted 4.5 kg of silver ornaments and 235 grams of gold from a jewellery shop at Gurgaon. They also allegedly looted passengers of a Delhi-bound Jaipur bus, decamping with Rs 1.35 lakh in cash and jewellery from passengers aboard. Major Laddan, the police said, is also wanted for killing a resident of Najafgarh in January 1998.

Chain-snatcher held in east Delhi
The east district police reportedly solved four cases of chain-snatching in the Shakarpur area. One person has been arrested in this connection and a chain, snatched from a nurse in Priyadarshini Vihar, recovered from his possession, sources said.

The accused, the police say, used to operate on a scooter along with his associates. Sajeed was arrested after they received a tip-off that he would be coming to Maharani Jewelers in Vikas Marg to dispose of stolen goods, say the police. He was arrested immediately after he entered the shop.

3 die in road accidents
Three persons were killed in road accidents in different parts of the Capital today.

The first accident occurred last evening when the a motorcyclist, Manoj Kumar 25, was hit by an unknown vehicle near the Dhaula Kuan circle.

Manoj was rushed to the Safdarjung Hospital by the PCR staff, but he succumbed to his injuries. A case has been registered at the Delhi Cantonment police station.

On the same day, a speeding truck HNU 914 allegedly crushed to death a pedestrian on the Gurgaon-Mehrauli Road near Arawli Farm House. The pedestrian was identified as Mahabir 50 of Dakshinapuri Delhi. The truck-driver, Mohd. Khan, has been arrested and the truck impounded.

In a third such incident, a scooterist was crushed to death allegedly by a speeding truck near the Ford Petrol Pump, Rangpuri, on the national highway.

The scooterist, Tapan Kumar 26, is a resident of Sahibabad Mohmedpur. The truck-driver, Kamal Singh, has been arrested and a case registered at the Vasant Kunj police station.

Woman arrested with illicit liquor
A woman was arrested near the railway line for allegedly possessing 200 pouches of country-made liquor and 96 quarters of whiskey.

The police say the accused, Seema, a resident of Jhuggi Railway halt at Inderpuri, was arrested during a routine check up in the area.

Man charged with fraud
The end of the millennium is the time to rake in the moolah. Or this is what an education consultant thought till he was caught by the police.

Sunil Sadashiv Kulkarni allegedly went to Nehru Place branch of the Bank of India to deposit a banker8217;s cheque of Rs 45 lakh on November 20. He had an account in the name of Millineum Education Consultant and demanded that the bank let him withdraw money on the basis of that cheque immediately. However, the bank staff got suspicious as the code listed at the bottom of the cheque looked suspicious and asked Kulkarni to collect the money on Monday. The cheque had been issued by the Rithari- Ghaziabad branch of the Overseas Bank.

The bank officials then reported the matter to the south district police for verification. When the police checked with the Overseas Bank, they denied having issued any such cheque.

Once the forgery was detected, the police laid a trap at the Bank of India and arrested Kulkarni when he came to the bank on November 22.

Forty-year-old Kulkarni is a resident of Noida and runs one educational institute each in Ghaziaband and Noida.

Crime Branch team sent to UP
A team of crime branch officials has been sent to Uttar Pradesh to trace the main accused of the Model Town shoot-out. However, the police does not have any definite clues about there whereabouts so far.

It may be recalled that Congress MLA Kanwar Karan Singh8217;s brother 8212; Narendra 8212; was killed and three others were injured in the shoot-out that took place in the Invitation Banquet Hall in Model Town on November 7. While three persons have been arrested, the main accused 8212; Rajesh Sharma, a property dealer and Vishal Kapahi, a businessman have been missing since the day of the incident. Senior officials said that investigations have revealed that Kapahi8217;s brother has a farmhouse near Nainital. The police suspect that the duo might be hiding there.

Meanwhile the police team that had been sent to Mumbai to search for them, has returned empty-handed.

The police also said that they were questioning the friends and relatives of the duo in a bid to trace them. The police also said that they had also questioned local businessman Sushil Goyal, who is a close acquaintance of Sharam, extensively in this regard.

The shoot-out case was handed to the Crime Branch on November 18 following allegations that the area DCP Satyendra Garg had close links with Goyal. Subsequently, Garg was also transferred out of the district and a vigilance verification was ordered by Commissioner of Police Ajai Raj Sharma after it was found that Garg had taken an imported pistol from Goyal.
