The West Zone One-day Ranji Trophy tournament would have been one of those unexciting grind of first class cricket but for the new point system. It ensured that the winner could not be decided till the last match was over.
According to the new point system introduced this year if a team concedes a bonus point it will also have a point taken off from its account. In the present system, the team that chases victory gets the bonus point if the target is achieved in 40 overs. This revision kept the tournament alive leaving the teams like Baroda, Mumbai and Gujarat fighting for the title till the last day. But the new point system has its critics as well as those welcoming it.
Gujarat, having collected a bonus point from Maharsahtra and Saurashtra, had to pay the price for conceding a bonus point to Mumbai. But the winner was not complaining. Baroda coach Balwinder Singh Sandhu was more than happy with the new point system. He says, 8216;8216;The new point system will definitely improve the standard of domestic one-dayers as the players will not be laid back till the match is over.
Sandhu says the new point system helps teams to come back strongly.
However, Saurashtra coach Debu Mitra is not too impressed with the point system. Mitra says,8216;8216;Giving a team an extra point is good, but at the same time deducting a point from the losing team8217;s tally does not make sense.8217;8217;
Maharashtra coach Paras Mhambrey, however, supports Sandhu. Mhambrey says that 8216;8216;the new point system drives the players to go for the kill and keeps the team on toes, making the whole tournament interesting by keeping everyone guessing.8217;8217;
