PALE, July 4: Beleaguered Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic has dissolved Parliament and called elections for September 1, in a move against her hardline foes that was immediately rejected by the government.

The government of Republika Srpska 8211; the Serb entity in Bosnia 8211; swiftly held an extraordinary meeting, and subsequently announced that Plavsic8217;s decision flouted the Constitution. It added that it had filed a writ before the court.

In a statement, the government referred to an article of the Constitution which authorises it to prevent any judicial act from being carried out which it deems 8220;unconstitutional or illegal.8221; It further accused the President of driving Republika Srpska towards 8220;a serious constitutional crisis8221;.
