New Delhi, Nov 8: Sticking to a plant diet can eliminate the chances of developing coronary heart diseases, a leading US surgeon said here today.
quot;Coronary heart disease need not exist, if it does, it need not be allowed to progress and this is possible if a low fat vegetarian diet or Plant Diet8217; is strictly followedquot;, Dr Caldwell Esselstyn, member of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine PCRM and a surgeon in Cleveland Clinic, USA, said in guest lecture in All India Institute of Medical Sciences AIIMS.
He showed lipid profiles of patients with severe coronary artery disease who followed a plant based diet containing less than 10 per cent fat and took cholesterol-lowering medication. The angiography showed that their disease had stabilised and in some cases it had selectively reversed.
Esselstyn said deaths due to heart diseases will double India by 2015, cancer rates are expected to triple and by 2025 India will have 57 million diabetes patients 8212; the highest number in any country.
quot;Milk is good but only for babies and calves. A diet rich in milk, milk products, oils, ghee and meat is very good if you want to live only till the age of 35. These are known to increase the risk of cancer, high blood pressure adult onset of diabetes and heart attacksquot;, he said.
Seconding Esselstyn8217;s statement Dr S C Manchanda, head of Cardiology, AIIMS, said the Satvik Aahar8217;, a diet recommended in the Vedas, was perfect untill a few years, but now to suit our modern lifestyle8217; a Modified Satvik Aahar, that is a vegetarian diet high in fibre and low in fat is needed.
