Planning Commission Secretary P. Shankar will be the new Chief Vigilance Commissioner and will take charge when N. Vittal’s tenure ends next month.
The final decision on Shankar as the new CVC was taken this evening at a meeting attended by Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee, Deputy PM L.K. Advani and Leader of Opposition Sonia Gandhi.
‘‘It is a great honour. Let me collect my thoughts, then react,’’ Shankar said, while Vittal called his successor ‘‘an excellent choice’’. Shankar had moved to the Planning Commission barely two months ago, succeeding S.S. Boparai who retired in June. He had a turbulent innings as TN Chief Secretary, recalled to the state by CM J. Jayalalithaa while he was in the Petroleum Ministry.
