Doubts are being raised over the competence of the State CID police in handling the multi-crore government securities scam as, more than two-and-a-half months after the scam broke, only one of the arrests in the case can be credited to the investigators in the Nagpur District Central Co-operative Bank (NDCCB) case.

Of the six of them, five were arrested only after they surrendered. This has often led to vociferous demand that the probe be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The State government, however, has steadfastly turned it down.

On Tuesday, the Nagpur bench of the Mumbai High Court received a public interest litigation (PIL) making a similar plea. The PIL, filed by senior advocate GC Singh, has expressed doubts about CID being able to handle the probe properly as many Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bigwigs are involved in the case. Pointing out that of the 550 of the 565 co-operative banks in the State are dominated by the NCP, which also controls the Home Ministry, the petitioner has sought handing over the probe to the CBI. The court has issued notices before admission, returnable in three weeks, to the concerned State and Central government departments.
