PATIALA, OCT 11: The recently constituted Dowry Prohibition Board held its maiden meeting under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Jasbir Singh Bir, where it was unanimously resolved to sternly deal with cases of dowry demand or ostentatious display of dowry.

According to an official spokesman here today, the DC would be available to receive complaints on Mondays and Thursdays from 12 noon to 1.30 pm in this connection. A complaint could also be made at telephone number 213191 in the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

Bir clarified at the meeting that any person who made a demand for dowry was liable to be booked under Section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act and could get a jail term of up to five years and a fine of up to Rs 15,000. Bir said that anybody who made a direct or indirect dowry demand from the girl8217;s parents or any of her relatives, could get a term of six months and a fine of up to Rs 10,000 under Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Those who displayed dowry items could also be booked, he added.

Bir said advisory committees had been constituted under the chairmanship of the administrative head of the district, with the district police chief and social security officer as members. These committees also had five social workers, in addition to two women, as members.
