As anticipated, the Government adjourned the Parliament session a week after the start and opted for a long recess 8212; till December 10 8212; on Friday.
Though Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi tried to put up a defence for the queer official move 8212; extending the two-day special session of the Lok Sabha originally convened for confidence vote on July 21 8212; for a second time, it is apparently the fear of a fresh confidence motion, which has prompted the Government move.
8220;We are not afraid of facing Parliament or convening a new session,8221; Ravi told reporters after the adjournment. 8220;We have a majority and we are confident of winning any vote,8221; he said while referring to the Left charge that the Government was running away from Parliament because it was worried about a no-confidence motion. Such a motion cannot be brought before the Lok Sabha twice in one session.
Unlike the normal practice of convening a monsoon session followed by a winter session, the Government has termed the latest session the second part of the special session for the Lok Sabha. For Rajya Sabha, it is a continuation of the 14th session.
The reporters sought to know what would he call the December session 8212; winter or monsoon, to which Ravi replied: 8220;Say anything you like.8221;
Ravi attributed the decision to leaders of all parties and said 8220;the suggestion came from the major opposition party8221;.
The BJP was critical of the current schedule on two counts. One, it overlapped important Hindu festivals like Dhanteras, Divali, Bhaiyya Dooj and Chhath. Two, parties and their MPs had to focus on their campaigns for Assembly elections in six states and were, therefore, not in a position to give their undivided attention to Parliament.
