Pak should continue peace process with India: Sharif

Pak’s new government should take forward the composite dialogue with India said Nawaz Sharif.

Pak’s new government should take forward the composite dialogue with India despite the process having been initiated by an ‘impulsive’ and ‘erratic’ President Pervez Musharraf, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said.

“I frankly don’t know what happened in 2004 and what transpired between Pakistan and India. Mr Musharraf as you know is a very erratic man, impulsive, doesn’t have any institutionalised decision making forum and he takes decisions off the cuff,” said Sharif, whose party is seeking the ouster of the President from office.

However, he added, that his party was committed to the peace process and would extend full cooperation on the issue to the ruling PPP, which heads the coalition government.

“We are committed to take this process forward, we have it in our manifesto and (we will) make sure that we extend full cooperation to the Peoples’ Party to work on this,” Sharif told NDTV.

His remarks came a day after the meeting between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries in Islamabad to review the fourth round of the Composite Dialogue.

The former Pakistan prime minister also said the two neighbours need to adopt more confidence building measures before embarking on the task to resolve the Kashmir issue.

“We need to build more confidence to be able to resolve this issue, we should seriously address the issue also at the same time and there has to be a resolve between the two sides to find a solution,” Sharif said when asked to comment on PPP Chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s remarks that the settlement of the Kashmir issue should not be left to future generation.
