Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, who has been a target of suicide attackers himself, has asked the religious parties to issue an edict against suicide bombings.
Why was the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, an alliance of religious parties, not issuing a “fatwa” against suicide bombings, even though suicide is forbidden in Islam, Musharraf said on PTV.
He also accused religious parties of endorsing violence in the name of religion. ‘‘They endorse all these acts, incite people against me for taking action against terrorists and they have to check to call themselves the custodians of Islam in Pakistan,’’ he was quoted as saying by Pakistan Observer. He also claimed that Al Qaeda masterminds have fled sanctuaries in Pakistan’s tribal areas to cities and other countries following operations by the Army. ‘‘They are desperate. They are trying to move away. They are perhaps trying to relocate elsewhere in the world.”
Meanwhile, gunmen killed three members of the Pakistan Peoples Party in Attock, ahead of tomorrow’s bypoll in which PM-designate Shaukat Aziz is contesting for the National Assembly.
