Finally recognising the moderate Hurriyat Conference, the Pakistan High Commission today invited senior leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq for talks with Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokar over the weekend.

The invitation assumes significance since till now, Pakistan had made it clear that they only accepted Syed Ali Shah Geelani — leader of the breakaway faction — as a representative of the real Hurriyat Conference. Incidentally, Geelani had also been invited to talk to Khokar, who would be in Delhi for foreign secretary-level talks on June 27-28.

Pakistan High Commissioner Aziz Ahmad Khan and his deputy Munawar Bhatti today called on Mirwaiz at his South Delhi residence to condole the death of his uncle Maulvi Mushtaq in a recent terrorist attack.

The two diplomats appreciated the efforts of Hurriyat Conference — led by Maulana Abbas Ansari — to find a solution to the Kashmir issue through talks. It was not yet clear if Mirwaiz had accepted the invitation. Hurriyat sources said that he would consult senior members of the amalgam, including Ansari and Abdul Gani Bhat, before taking a final decision. The Mirwaiz had come to Delhi to mourn the death of 29-year-old son of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Front chairman Bushan Bazaz.
