Some giants in the FMCG sector may have slowed down, but the sector is considered to be all set to surge ahead, thanks to regional players and some product categories.

All India Management Association AIMA senior vice president Sunil Alagh said: 8216;8216;I am optimistic about the FMCG sector. We relate the sector8217;s potential to some bad performances by market leaders. But so many small and regional players are doing well. I expect strong growth in tea and packaged foods8217;8217;.

An analyst with a leading Mumbai-based brokerage house finds the edible oil segment to be one among the fastest growing FMCG categories. It grew by 13-14 per cent in last year and has been posting a double-digit growth over past 2-3 years.

Alagh pointed out that regional players have been showing higher growth rates than the national ones because they have been tapping the regional consumer tastes. For instance, in tea, regional players like Wagh Bakri in Gujarat and Sapat in Maharashtra have been doing well. They are expected to grow at over 20 per cent per annum in near future. Alagh added that some bigger players like Duncans and Tata Tea have also shown good growth of about 10-15 per cent.
