MUMBAI, March 23: The Bombay High Court direction for a CBI probe into the MSEB contract awarded to Power Plant Performance Limited PPIL dominated the proceedings in the State Legislature today with Opposition members in both Houses walking out after calls for a discussion of the order were rejected.

Members of the Congress in the Legislative Council demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde, who also holds the Energy portfolio. Chairman N S Pharande however refused to allow a discussion on the issue, prompting a walkout by the entire Opposition led by Chhagan Bhujbal.

The High Court directive pertained to a department directly controlled by Munde, Bhujbal had pointed out earlier, while moving an adjournment motion demanding a debate on the order.

Pharande8217;s assurance that the government would 8220;take the necessary action8221; as directed by the court only served to set off a volley of accusations and counter-accusations between the Opposition and the Treasury benches.

ShakenTreasury bench members urged the Chairman to expunge Bhujbal8217;s remarks, triggering more protests and slogans from the Opposition. The uproar ended with Pharande adjourning the House.

When the Council reassembled, it was pointed out that the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Dattaji Nalawade, had directed the government to make a statement on the matter. At this, Munde rose to assure the members that a statement would be made in the Council too.

The war of words however picked up again, culminating in the walkout. It showed no signs of letting up even after the Opposition members returned, prompting Pharande to wind up the proceedings for the day.
