
NEW DELHI, Sept 25: The National Cooperative Agricultural Marketing Federation NAFED has raised the export prices of onions further, in a fresh bid to rein in rising domestic prices of the vegetable.
Freight on Board FOB price for onions to Dubai from Mumbai port has been raised to US 500 a tonne from US 475 in August, NAFED sources said. The prices have been raised to discourage exports and ensure better supply in the domestic market in the wake of sharp rise in onion prices locally.Onion prices are hovering around Rs 40 a kg in retail outlets following reports of rains in main marketing centres in Maharashtra and Gujarat and shortage of stocks. This is the second time export prices for onions has been raised in the last two months. In August, NAFED raised the prices to US 475 a tonne FOB to the Gulf region from US 325. Onion exports, which make up 90 per cent of India8217;s vegetable exports, earned Rs 325 crore in foreign exchange for the country last year.
Dengue alert
NASHIK: The NashikMunicipal Coporation NMC has sounded an alert on the spread of dengue fever following the discovery of four patients in the Nashik Road area. The NMC has collected blood samples of 16 patients and sent them to the National Institute of Virology, Pune. Four of these samples tested positive for dengue. The NMC has asked citizens to maintain cleanliness to prevent the growth of mosquitoes. Four squads have been formed to undertake special cleanliness drives.
Child murder case
KOLHAPUR: The hearing of the sensational case of kidnapping and murder of children by Anjanabai Gavit, was adjourned till October 6 by additional sessions judge G K Yedke here on Thursday.
During the seven-day hearing, Kiran Shinde, an accomplice of accused Anjanabai and her two daughters Renuka and Seema, who turned approver in the case, told the court about the murders of nine children and also revealed the facts about the murder of a tenth child, not known until his confession.
Teacher murdered
NASHIK: A24-year-old school teacher, Vidhya Vinayak Pagar, was allegedly pushed into a well in Virane village near Malegaon on Thursday. Vidhya8217;s body was covered with bruises, indicating that she had been tortured before being pushed to her death. Her brother alleged that Vidhya8217;s husband, Vinayak, also a teacher, used to torture her, demanding money. The police have registered a case against Vinayak Sahebrao Pagar, his parents and brothers.
