One campaign into five

The Congress party8217;s Madhya Pradesh unit is that rare political entity that has spokespersons for different factions. Commerce Minister and Lok Sabha MP from Chhindwara, Kamal Nath, former chief minister Digvijay Singh, PCC chief Suresh Pachauri, Union minister of state and Lok Sabha MP from Guna Jyotiraditya Scindia, and HRD Minister Arjun Singh8217;s son Ajay Singh represent the major factions in the party.

In keeping with the Congress thumb rule of not projecting a chief ministerial candidate, the party has officially not projected anyone to lead the campaign. Each leader, however, seems to have carved out a piece of the state for himself.

Kamal Nath was quickest off the block in Chhindwara. Incidentally, he was instrumental in bringing all factions together on his home turf by organising a 8216;Unity Show8217; recently but it ended up as a bid to project him as a contender for the top job. Scindia, who clearly has age and charisma on his side, began in Gwalior only on Wednesday. While Digvijay Singh has opted out of the contest, Nath, Scindia and Pachauri are MPs.

The only faction leader in the fray is Ajay Singh, who is also the campaign committee chairman. He is busy campaigning in Churhat in Sidhi district. The party came out with its chargesheet against the ruling party only on Wednesday.

The Congress claims there is a strategy behind going slow. 8220;We don8217;t want to invite national leaders before the tempo begins and make them stare at empty spaces like the BJP did,8221; says Congress leader Brijmohan Srivastava.
