South peninsula records near normal rainfall during northeast monsoon season this year: IMD
The region recorded 283.4 mm of rainfall during the northeast monsoon, which is a departure of 3.7% from the average.
The rainfall during the season's start in late October was mainly enhanced by Cyclone Montha that hit near Kakinada along the Andhra Pradesh coast.
This year, the southern peninsular region of India experienced near-normal rainfall during the northeast monsoon season, with a total of 283.4 mm. This represents a departure of just 3.7 per cent from the average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
As a result, the country enjoyed good and widespread rainfall during both monsoon seasons in 2025.
The season officially ends on December 31, though the actual monsoon withdrawal is yet to be realised. This despite the region recording significantly below average rainfall during November (-43 per cent) and December (- 35.9 per cent till December 30), according to the rainfall data by IMD.
The rainfall during the season’s start in late October was mainly enhanced by Cyclone Montha that hit near Kakinada along the Andhra Pradesh coast. Thus, the rainfall during the onset month was 40 per cent above normal.
Also known as the winter monsoon, the core regions that receive rainfall include coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam, south interior Karnataka, Kerala, and Mahe. Tamil Nadu receives more than half of its annual rainfall during the October-December period.
Over the past three months, there were fewer rainfall-bearing weather systems than usual developing in the Bay of Bengal, which contributed to below-average rainfall in several areas. Among the southern states, Kerala recorded the lowest seasonal rainfall at a deficiency of 21 per cent during this northeast monsoon season. However, all other states and union territories receiving northeast monsoon rain reported normal rainfall for the season, according to IMD data.
