FROM the majestic Himalayas to the quietitude of the Bharatpur bird sanctuary, from Periyar to Chilka, Lakshadweep to Kutch, this book is a tribute to nature 8212; desolate or verdant, overwhelming or simply heart-warming but ever evocative. A perusal of the book would indicate that Prakash Dubey, and a very accomplished photographer he seems to be, is sold on nature more than its people. This is a portrait, literally, of Planet Earth in its pristine condition, unspoilt by the human race.
The pictures are impressive; as always some leave a deeper stamp than the others. Three of the best are the ghostly forest of Keoladeo Ghana pages 112-113, the sunrise from behind the mountains of the high Himalayas pages 150-151 and the mountain stream page 56 in the Valley of Flowers. Ladakh is something of a flavour of the season with photographers but few cameras have done as much justice to it than Dubey8217;s.
This book has many things going for it. The production values are high, the pictures have printed well, there8217;s even a little mutant index at the back. Nevertheless, the pictures themselves seem at times haphazardly laid out. A second edition would perhaps lend itself to a more structured format. That final point is of course a subjective one. For Prakash and Katie Dubey this book appears to be more a labour of love. At least this reviewer would be happy to see more of his camera8217;s adventures in print.
