Myths 038; Legends of India
By William Radice
Viking India
Price: Rs 695

One: It8217;s exhaustive 132 in all. Two: It8217;s wide-ranging, beginning Before Creation, at number 31 it hits The Last Journey. Three: It tells you why women are beardless 8212; according to this book, in ancient times women had beards but they disappeared because of this nanny goat who heard that the tiger, king of the jungle, wanted a pretty bride for his son, and so asked her owner, a woman, to let her wear her beard so she could look beautiful for the tiger8217;s son; the woman said yes, the goat married the son and never returned with the beard, leaving the woman beardless! Much more romantic than hirsuitism. Four: It8217;s got enough stories to make you the best darn dadi in town. Five: I8217;ve finally understood the dice-game.

Historical Dictionary of Sikhism
By W.H. Mcleod
Oxford University Press
Price: Rs 395

W.H. McLeod, a New Zealander and Emeritus Professor at the University of Otago in Dunedin, who has written five books on Sikhism since 1968, makes available a reprint of his 1995Sikh dictionary, which has more than a 1,000 entries. This is a very useful reference book for both the lay reader and the scholar, as much for its main content as for its cross-referencing and bibliography of books in English on Sikh religion and history. But a common term like 8216;gatka8217; the Sikh martial art is inexplicably missing from the book.
