PUNE, Nov 29: A centering carpenter working at a construction site in the densely-populated Guruwar Peth was killed on the spot, while a labourer assisting him was wounded when a wall of an adjoining dilapidated building caved-in, burying them under the debris this morning.Nine labourers, working for Ramtekdi-based contractor Jagan Baroi, were carrying out the centering work of the walls forming the chamber of the lift when the mishap took place around 11.30 am on Sunday.The 28-year-old centering carpenter Sunil Maniram Baroi and his assistant labourer Babu Basant Roy (25), who were buried under the debris, were rescued by a team of firemen summoned from Pune Municipal Corporation's central fire brigade and shifted to the Sassoon Hospital.Sunil, who had suffered injuries on head and neck, was proclaimed dead on arrival at the hospital. Babu, who suffered injuries on his right hand, was discharged after first aid.Baroi said builder Rajesh Jain and contractor Sameer Shah are constructing a four-storied building at 766, Guruwar Peth. The plot on which the building is being constructed is owned by a Guruwar-Peth based sweet-mart owner.Baroi said he was awarded the contract of laying the foundation for the entire building, erecting 15 RCC pillars and constructing concrete walls to form the lift chamber. Babu said the wall of the toilet in the adjoining dilapidated building suddenly crashed.``Both of us were trapped under the debris. Some wooden planks, which fell on me, protected me. However, Babu suffered several injuries as the rubble fell on him. We were rescued about half an hour later,'' he recalled.Sunil, who hails from Shoguna village in Nadia district of West Bengal, had come to Pune in search of a job around two years ago and started working with Baroi, who also hails from the same village. He had left the job with Baroi for better prospects last year. However, he had again started working with Baroi this month. Sunil, who got married last year, resided in Bavdhan near Pashan with his wife. His parents and farmer brother are at his native place. His last rites will be performed at Shoguna, Baroi said.The Khadak police have filed an FIR accusing Sameer Ramesh Shah, site supervisor Hiten Jayprakash Shah and petty contractor Baroi for ``negligence''.
