KANPUR, March 30: The psyche of a seamer-friendly wicket proved to be the undoing of Haryana batsmen. In a spineless performance against a spirited Uttar Pradesh attack, they surrendered the advantage to the hosts on the first day of their five-day Ranji Trophy cricket quarter-final match at the Ordnance Equipment Factory ground here today.

After bowling Haryana out for a paltry 156, UP openers Jyoti Yadav and Mohammad Kaif showed the right approach needed on a double-paced wicket to end the day unseparated at 60.

Obaid Kamal, veteran of many a battle, showed his class once again as he ripped through the Haryana middle-order. Haryana were precariously placed at 77 for five and the run out of Dhanraj only added to their woes. Vijay Yadav fell to Pandey’s guiles before young seamer Mohammad Saif returned to polish off the tail.

If Haryana managed 156, it was largely due to the joint efforts of debutant Ravinder Nain and Pankaj Thakur. The two flogged their willows for a while but it was too late to makeany dramatic turnaround for their side.

For Haryana, seamer Vineet jain started well, troubling the UP openers, especially Mohammad Kaif, but the all-important breakthrough eluded him.Once Jyoti Yadav and Kaif settled in, they batted soundly.
