The Kerala government has submitted to the High Court that there was nothing unconstitutional in MLAs taking oath in the name of Allah.
The government has made the submission in connection with the writ petition filed by Madhu Parumala, a BJP youth leader, challenging the constitutional validity of 11 newly elected MLAs in Kerala who were sworn in in the name of Allah — and not in the name of God, or by making a solemn affirmation, as prescribed. The petitioner had cited the recent case of a Hindu MLA who was penalised by the same court for taking oath in the name of a venerated Hindu guru. The government submission says ‘Allah’ and ‘God’ are synonymous.
