CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat made it clear that the Left will not budge from its firm stand opposing the Indo-US nuclear deal.
“We will not compromise, if they go ahead with the strategic alliance with the US… If they go ahead to fulfil their word with President Bush. For forty years this agreement will bind India. It will affect our independent foreign policy. We cannot accept that,” Karat said in an interview to pro-CPI(M) Kairali satellite TV channel.
It was strange that the UPA Government was pressing for going ahead with the nuclear agreement when the country was faced with burning issues like price rise, he said.
The Congress should realise that it could not rule on its own at the Centre, he added.
