New bldg for IIT8217;s management school

MUMBAI, SEPT 14: The Indian Institute of Tecnology, Mumbai got an unexpected bonus at the formal inauguration of the School of Management SOM on the IIT campus today 8211; a donation of Rs one crore from the Hindi Vidya Bhavan.

IIT director, Dr Suhas Sukhatme announced the receipt of the donation after the SOM building was inaugurated by Vice-chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, Mukesh D Ambani.

8220;We have already received a string of generous donations from our student alumni in the recent past and this latest donation from Hindi Vidya Bhavan is indeed most welcome today,8221; said Dr Sukhatme. The interest generated from the amount will be utilised for student scholarships, awards, books, and other general needs of the SOM.

In his speech, chief guest Mukesh Ambani said that for the progress of modern-day economy, business technology has to go hand-in-hand with the rapid advancements in technology. 8220;Hence a School of Management within the IIT campus is the need of the hour. IIT hasshown exemplary vision and spirit by starting the SOM,8221; said Ambani.

The three storeyed building also houses IIT8217;s Industrial Research and Consulting Centre. The SOM was set up in IIT in 1994, with the dual mission of training professionals to manage business vis-a-vis engineering and industrial technology. However, the SOM was allotted a separate building of its own only now.
