NDA convenor George Fernandes has been explaining to his party nominees and functionaries these days that neither he nor the JDU had surrendered to the Hindutva forces by agreeing to include the temple issue in the NDA agenda to be released to the media tomorrow.

Fernandes had come under some pressure given the kind of campaign that the RJD has launched in Bihar in which the JDU was also being labelled a constituent of the Sangh Parivar. Fernandes has told party functionaries that there was no question of flip-flop on the issue and that his stand remains the same.

A negotiated settlement is the only way, and that according to him, is all that the agenda says. His point is if the temple issue has been raised in such a guarded manner taking into account the viewpoints of the numerous parties that were part of the NDA, no one could accuse the partners of yielding ground to the BJP.

The JDU is feeling slightly cornered on this issue because RJD campaigners in Bihar are trying to obliterate all distinctions between the party8217;s nominees and those of the BJP. RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav8217;s logic has been that the very mention of the issue in the NDA agenda suggests that the constituents had given in to BJP pressure.
