The work on the restoration and expansion of the Rock Garden in Palakkad, Kerala is being undertaken by a team of international volunteers headed by Tony Rajer, coordinator of Nek Chand Foundation, which had set up the first Rock Garden at Chandigarh.
He is coordinating with artistes from Kerala and the Nirmithi Kendra to revive the garden. Conceived by Nek Chand in 1994, the 1.5 acre garden is made of waste materials on the lines of the Rock Garden in Chandigarh. Paths, statues and swings enliven this little garden of broken crockery. The garden is situated next to the Malampuzha Dam in and is operated by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC).
Rajer said: “The garden had fallen into a state of decay. Many statues have broken due to vandalism. We are trying to restore Nek Chand’s dream for his southern garden with the assistance of many Kerala based artistes including K Swaminathan and S Vasu.”
International artistes Nicole Banowetz, Cory Phillips and Brett Swanson are anxious to visit the Chandigarh Rock Garden and continue helping to keep the Nek Chand vision alive, he added.
The Foundation promotes the completion, dissemination and preservation of art and propagates the universal messages of peace, harmony, ecology and art through the creative use of waste materials.
