The National War Memorial erected by the defence authorities with funds collected by the Indian Express Citizens’ War Memorial Committee-from citizens, corporate houses and state government-is set to be renamed as Southern Command War Memorial. The new name will come into effect on Vijay Diwas, December 16. The day will see a special function to pay homage to the martyrs with a tri-service wreath-laying ceremony.
The foundation of the National War Memorial, inaugurated in August 1998. Citizens of Pune contributed to the fund, under the aegis of the Express Citizens’ Forum through a special Express Citizens’ War Memorial Committee.
However, the renaming has not gone down well with some activists of the Committee who had worked towards the cause.
Activist Shashikant Mehendale, who was earlier convenor of the committee, said that Southern Command should not have changed the name of the National War Memorial.
“Late Prakash Kardaley, senior editor of The Indian Express, had led the campaign to erect the memorial in memory of the martyrs with civilian initiative. The Southern Command can come up with another war memorial rather than change the name,’ he said.
The Committee also had Late Brigadier N B Grant as chairman and Lieutenant General (retired) Y D Sahasrabuddhe and Lt Gen (retd) B T Pandit as vice-presidents for the war memorial. The war memorial has names of martyrs who died in counter-insurgency operations post-independence.
