A division bench of Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice P C Ghose said 8220;the court cannot remain totally unaffected like mute spectators by the miserable plight of the villagers only on the ground that there are completely divergent views expressed about ground realities by the different sides.8221;

It also observed that 8220;innocent villagers living in the troubled area have been victimised purely due to political differences between different political parties.8221;

As an interim measure, the court directed the West Bengal government to ensure the resumption of ferry services between Nandigram and Haldia, removal of obstruction preventing the people of Nandigram and other adjoining villages from having easy and safe access to markets, bazaars, haats, schools and colleges.

It has also directed the state to ensure free rations for affected families, particularly rice, wheat, kerosene, and other essential commodities, besides medical assistance for those hurt in clashes in the region and in the March firing that left 14 dead.
