BUENOS AIRES, JULY 10: River Plate players had to fight tooth and nail to avoid being stripped naked by their own delirious fans after they won the Argentine Clausura (closing) Championship on Sunday.
Around 100 supporters invaded the pitch after River had beaten Ferro Carril Oeste 3-0 away to clinch the title with a match to spare, witnesses said. They then attempted to rip off the players’ kit to keep as souvenirs as the team completed a lap of honour.
Argentine international goalkeeper Roberto Bonano was reported to have suffered a nose injury as he fought to keep at least his underpants while veteran Eduardo Berizzo was seen to have his shirt ripped off by jubiliant fans.
River Plate fans were also seen fighting each other to keep the shirt of the team’s Colombian defender Mario Yepes.
Police said that around 100 founds were arrested following the incidents at Ferro Carril Oeste’s Stadium.
River, who have only lost one game out of 18 under coach Americo Gallego, completed a `double’ as they had also won the Apertura (opening) Championship, the first of the two tournaments in the argentine season, in December.
Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel scored twice on Sunday, while Pablo Aimar claimed the third goal.
River are six points clear of Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo with one game each to play. Boca, River’s arch-rivals and newly-crowned South American champions, thrashed Belgrano 5-1 but their win was in vain.
