AUGUST 6: A 62-year-old woman was murdered in her flat in the Malabar Hill area this afternoon. The assailants, apparently a group of robbers, slit open the woman8217;s throat. Gold chains and some other valuables worth over Rs 3 lakh are reported missing from the house.
Premlata Gupta was found dead in her sixth-floor apartment in Rungta colony by her servant. The murder took place at around 12.30 pm when Gupta was alone at home, Malabar Hill police told Express Newsline.
Police have detained the servant Rajaram, alias Chhotu, for interrogation. He was employed by the Guptas only last week. The maid servant serving the family is on leave for the last three-and-a-half months. Investigating officers said Gupta was not happy with Rajaram8217;s style of working. She also did not approve of Rajaram bringing his friends at work. She had reportedly warned Rajaram against this. He, however did not mend his ways.
Today, Pannalal Gupta, husband of the deceased, left the house with his grandchildren early in the morning leaving behind only his wife and Rajaram.Rajaram, however, claims he left the house to purchase vegetables at around 12 pm. His statement recorded by the police says that he returned home at around 1 pm and saw Gupta lying in a pool of blood. A frightened Rajaram informed Pannalal about the murder, who in turn alerted the Malabar Hill police station.
Officers, who rushed to the spot, found a locker in the house unlocked with some sharp weapon. All the valuables were missing. The police have also identified some marks of scuffle, which they feel must have taken place between Gupta and the assailants.
The Malabar Hill police have filed a case of murder and robbery and are hoping to nab the culprits soon.
Police have also asked Malabar Hill residents to maintain a detailed profile of their servants including his/her photograph, local and permanent addresses and a list of acquaintances.
