One hurt in cylinder blast

MUMBAI: Kantilal Chandra Rana (60) of Borivali (W) suffered 60 per cent burns when an LPG gas cylinder exploded in his house on Saturday morning. Fire engines, a water tanker and an ambulance were immediately sent to the spot and the fire was put out, the fire brigade said. However, the walls and ceiling were partly damaged in the explosion. Assistant robs jeweller

MUMBAI: A 21-year-old assistant working in a jewellery shop in Vikhroli fled with Rs 41 lakh worth gold ornaments and cash from the shop on Saturday. Govind Singh Rajput decamped with 6 kg of gold and Rs 16 lakh cash from Meghana Jewellers in Vikhroli, where he was employed by Swatantra Kumar Jain.

SpecialPublic Prosecutor G A Panna told the court that Shivaji Nanaware (38) had raped the victim on September 21, 1997. He said the girl, who stayed in the women’s wing of the remand home, had gone to the male wing to fetch water. On her way, Nanaware caught hold of her, slapped her, took her to a corner of the kitchen and raped her. The matter was reported to Bhausaheb Kadre, the District Women’s Welfare Officer who lodged a complaint with the Dongri police.

Nanaware was charged with sections 363, 367 and 368 of the IPC and has been sentenced to three, five and five years respectively. However the sentences will run concurrently.
