
Policeman arrested for graft
A police Sub-Inspector attached to the General branch of the police was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB on Friday evening for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a businessman. PSI Bhimrao Bira Vhanmane 33 has been remanded to police custody till September 7, by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A A A Kidwai of the 37th Esplanade Court.
According to the ACB remand application, the officer was investigating a complaint regarding bounced cheques to the tune of Rs 3 lakh lodged by a entrepreneur against another businessman. Vhanmane told the person against whom the complaint was lodged that he would solve the matter provided a sum of Rs 1.75 lakh was paid and threatened him with arrest and legal action.
The businessman then approached the ACB. On September 3, when Vhanmane visited the businessman at his residence in Kandivali, he was caught accepting the bribe by the ACB team which was on his trail. The officer had also taken Rs 5,000from the businessman, earlier.
Real estate agent held
A real estate agent was recently arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the police in connection with a cheating case involving Rs 27 lakh. Pyarelal Prajapati, the Chairman of Shree Om Shanti Co-operative Housing Society, Airoli was produced before the 37th Espalande Court and remanded to police custody till September 7 by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A A A Kidwai.
According to Police Inspector M R Chavan, one M G Ramchandra, Managing Director of Arcade India Private Limited had purchased 28 shops covering 13,520 square feet area to be constructed at a commercial complex of the Om Shanti society, in 1987.
Ramchandra had paid a sum of Rs 27 lakh for the shops and was promised possession in 1988. However, according to Chavan, Ramchandra was given only four shops in the complex.
