War over Delhi stray dogs order: Govt says AAP’s lying, Kejriwal claims ‘count dogs’ order ‘insult’ to teachers

A political row has erupted in Delhi as Education Minister Ashish Sood accused AAP of spreading misinformation over a DoE order on appointing nodal officers for stray dog issues near schools.

A political slugfest over an order on appointment of nodal officers by schools for handling matters related to stray dogs escalated on Tuesday with Education Minister Ashish Sood accusing the AAP of running a “coordinated campaign of lies”, and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal doubling down on his charge that teachers were being burdened with non-academic work.

The controversy stems from a Directorate of Education (DoE) directive asking schools to appoint nodal officers to handle issues related to stray dogs in the vicinity of educational institutions, in compliance with a Supreme Court order.

Addressing mediapersons on Tuesday, Sood alleged that AAP leaders had been spreading misinformation on social media by claiming that teachers in government schools were being deployed to count stray dogs, a claim he called “completely false”.

He challenged the AAP to produce any order or circular directing teachers to perform such duties. “If any such order exists, it should be made public immediately,” Sood said, adding that failing this, the party should apologise to the people of Delhi for misleading them.

Sood referred to an official clarification issued by the DoE on Monday, which, he said, had “categorically stated that no directions were issued for assigning any stray dog-related work to teachers”.

Following this, Kejriwal posted on X in Hindi, “Will teachers in Delhi’s government schools teach children, or will they count dogs on the streets instead? This order from the BJP’s Delhi government exposes their thinking and priorities. For the BJP, education is not even an issue; these people are insulting teachers and ruining schools.”

“When our government was in Delhi, we respected teachers, removed unnecessary burdens from them, and made children’s education the topmost priority. We sent teachers abroad for training and improved the schools.Today, the BJP government is bent on destroying everything.” he added.

Meanwhile, accusing AAP of repeatedly attempting to create administrative chaos through what he described as “false claims”, Sood said such episodes reflected a pattern of “lies, noise and rumours” rather than substantive engagement.

He said AAP was attempting to shield corrupt officials and undermine governance reforms undertaken by the BJP-led government under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

He also dismissed AAP’s claims on the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB), saying nearly 16,000 candidates had been selected through the board since 2022, and alleged that the Opposition was deliberately spreading confusion on the issue.
