Former Jaunpur MP Dhananjay Singh, a gangster-turned politician, and his associates were booked for alleged rioting, criminal intimidation and other charges, police said on Tuesday.

Besides rioting and criminal intimidation, the FIR was registered on charges of outraging modesty of a woman using force or assault and provisions of the SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act in Lucknow.

While Dhananjay was not present at the spot, his aide Vinay Singh, the husband of a block head in Jaunpur, is seen in a purported video calling on phone and asking the complainant and others to talk to the former MP. The accused also included a police gunman.

Lucknow Police Commissioner also removed the Sushant Good City Station House Officer (SHO) Upendra Singh for not lodging the victim’s complaint and instead lodging an FIR against them on Vinay’s complaint.

Kaushal Tiwari and other residents of Swastika City colony alleged that Vinay and his men on Monday were getting a wall built on a road  used by the locals for over 20 years. The residents objected to the encroachment and illegal construction when Vinay and his men allegedly beat them up and threatened to kill them with firearms.

The complainants further alleged that Vinay Singh dialled number on his phone and asked him and others to talk to the person on the other side on the phone telling that he was Dhananjay Singh. The residents, however, refused to take the phone calls.
