
Four held while planning Id-Mahavir Jayanti row
Four persons were arrested by the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar MRA Marg police at Bora Bazar in the Fort area on Friday when they were planning8217; to create communal tension on the forthcoming Mahavir Jayanti and Bakri Id festival both of which fall on Monday March 29. This occurred at around 6.30 pm as Police Inspector Khan and staff were patrolling in the Bora Bazar area and overheard their conversation. The accused have been identified as Satish Jambuwant Singh24, Surendrakumar Sharma40, Nitin Pawar20 and Macky alias Immaculate Cajetan Fernandes.
Central Railway block
Central Railway will operate a mega-block on Up Harbour line between Vadala Road and CST stations from 10 am to 4 pm on March 28. All Up harbour line services will be suspended between Kurla and CST stations and all Up services from Belapur/Panvel to CST will be run via mainline from Kurla during the block. Special trains in the Up and Down direction will be run betweenBandra and Mankhurd/Vashi via Vadala Road at a frequency of 30 minutes. Special trains will also be run on Down direction between CST and Bandra/Belapur/Panvel on Down harbour line.
Pensioners file plea for revised wages
State pensioners have filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court against the State Government delay in implementing the Fifth Pay Commission recommendations. According to a press release, the Maharashtra State pensioners and their associations have resorted to this step after sustained pleas to the State Govt since October 1997 yielded no results.
SBI fund for conservation projects
The State Bank of India has granted an endowment of Rs 10 lakhs to the Bombay Natural History Society BNHS to aid its activities in wildlife research, environment protection and public awareness. The bank8217;s donation will be kept as a special SBI Endowment Fund for Public Education, Awareness and Research to finance the Society8217;s projects.
Textile stir off
Textile mill workers who wereon an indefinite strike in front of Mafatlal Mill No 3 since March 22 ended their stir today after an assurance from the Chief Minister to look into their demands. The workers will hold a meeting on April 2 in front of the mill to follow up on the action taken up by the State Govt.
Burglary attempt foiled
Four men were nabbed as they were about to break in into some premises at Chira Bazar in south Mumbai on Friday evening. A squad attached to L T Marg police station laid a trap after receiving information about the gang8217;s plans to loot a flat at B Velkar Street in the neighbourhood. Around 6.20 pm the police on watch spotted four men moving suspiciously near the flat under observation. The policemen, who were in mufti8217;, closed in and nabbed them just as they were about to break in. The four apprehended men 8212; Mahendra Jadhav 25, Chandan alias Shyamal 22, Chandulal Soni 22 Kisan Shedge 23 8212; have been remanded to police custody till April 4 next month.
