
Khwaja gang member killed
Crime Branch officers shot dead an extortionist of the Khwaja gang in an encounter at Gamdevi early this morning.
After a stakeout at Kennedy Bridge, Nana Chowk, a police squad from Unit II spotted Riyaz Ahmed Rauf Shaikh alias Munna Mental at around 1.50 am. Shaikh was injured in the exchange of fire, and died before he could reach hospital. Shaikh8217;s recklessness and die-hard attitude had earned him the sobriquet of Munna Mental. He was accused in offences like murder, attempt to murder, assault and extortion.
Gamdevi police have registered a case of attempt to murder against Shaikh.
Fake certificates: UDCT clerk held
A senior clerk with the University Department of Chemical Technology UDCT at Matunga E was arrested in connection with a bogus documents racket. Kalachowki police arrested Hemant Ganghurde on July 30 and recovered bogus degree certificates of universities of Mumbai and Pune. Earlier, during a verification drive by the university, severalstudents were found to have tried to obtain admission at the university8217;s Institute of Distance Education IDE using fake documents. Police complaints were registered in this connection. Ganghurde is the first university staff member to have been arrested in this connection. His arrest comes close on the heels of a bogus degree racket in the Nagpur University, where senior university officials have been found involved in the racket.
American library inaugurated
The reincarnated American Resource Information Centre ARIC, formerly the American Center Library, was inaugurated by the new Consul General David Good on Thursday afternoon. Also present at the opening ceremony today were United States Information Service USIS Director Sheldon E Austin.
Repairs on the building necessitated the closure of the library two years ago. Now the library will be thrown open to the public during the open house day on Friday and formally restart operations on August 9.
The library stocks CD-ROMs and onlinedatabases which provide on-line access to more than 3000 periodicals. It will be open from Monday to Saturday and closed on Wednesdays.
