
Prevention of eye injuries
The National Society for Prevention of Blindness NSPB India-Mumbai branch is observing June 1999 as the month for prevention of eye injuries and will launch an awareness campaign near the slums off the railway tracks, to persuade people not to indulge in stone-throwing at local trains.
NSPB-Mumbai president Dr S Natrajan said most of the causes of blindness are preventable. There are about 12 million people in India suffering from preventable blindness because of various problems. Above 90 per cent of all the eye injuries are preventable and 45 per cent occur at home. 8220;The cost of preventing blindness is much less than the cost of rehabilitating the blind,8221; he added.
V Care to mark No Tobacco day
V CARE, an emotional support group for cancer patients has planned an awareness programme to commemorate World No Tobacco Day on May 31. The group will use hoardings, banners and car stickers to make people aware about the dangers of tobacco. Tobacco in itsvarious forms such as cigarettes, bidis, chewing tobacco, gutka, paan masala, snuff and zarda is the cause of numerous diseases particularly cancer of head, neck region and lungs.
Weekend course on social work
The College of Social Work, Nirmala Niketan conducts six-months weekend quot;Certificate in Para Professional Social Work Training Programmequot; in Hindi for youth interested in working on social issues. Free career talks by RBCS

Advertising workshops
The Advertising Agencies Association of India will conduct two three-month workshops on copywriting and client servicing in the end of May. The creative workshop is targeted at undergraduates and graduates from any discipline. The workshop on client servicing is targeted at client servicing executives with one to two years experience. The sessions will be held on Saturdays at the AAAI office at Cuffe Parade.
