  • BUCTU flays V-C8217;s decision

  • THE Bombay University and College Teachers8217; Union BUCTU will be organising a protest dharna on March 16 8212; the day of the budget meeting of the University of Mumbai8217;s Senate 8212; to demand that the proposed inquiry against BUCTU leader professor C R Sadasivan be dropped. The university8217;s Vice-Chacellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh had said that she would be setting up a panel to look into allegations of sexual harassment and immoral conduct against Prof Sadasivan, following complaints made by the National Students Union of India NSUI based on an anonymous letter received by the union.
  • The BUCTU, at its executive meeting, strongly8217; condemned the flippant manner8217; in which thevice-chancellor decided to conduct an enquiry, and also rejected the allegations against Prof Sadasivan as baseless8217;. A press release issued by the union also stated that the V-C was trying to 8220;pander to her adversaries such as the NSUI to extricate herself from the mess in issues like the MBBS marks scam8221;. The BUCTU has also called upon Dr Deshmukh to make public the concrete signed statements received by her.

    Kalina residents8217; morcha for water

  • HUNDREDS of residents from Kalina took out a morcha on Saturday to the H/East ward office protesting against the continued severe water shortage for nearly a month. Minimal or no water flows from the taps in areas including Air India Colony, Indian Airlines Colony, Kolivary Village, CST Road. Resident Vinay Shetty informed that while water is normally available between 4.15-8.15am the civic authorities were leaving it barely for an hour between 6-7am. 8220;People are being forced to get up very early in the morning and run around to get water, sometimeseven going to the neighbouring areas in search of it,8221; he added. The residents8217; delegation led by independent corporator George Abraham presented a memorandum to the ward officer who assured to look into the matter. Meanwhile, on March 23, 1999 civic officials are expected to meet the residents of the areas severely affected to chalk a short term solution to the problem. Ward officer S H Ghadge-Patil could not be contacted for comment.
  • Thespian Moti Sagar dead

  • MOTI Sagar, a Hindi cinema hero of yesteryears passed away this morning after a cardiac arrest. He was 72. The end came when he was discussing the dates for his next shooting schedule for his TV serial. He had acted in a number of hits like Apna Ghar, Burma Road, Chhoti Chhoti Batein in fifties and sixties. He came to the film industry with his cousins Motilal, Mukesh and Tara Harish and started as a singer and then took to acting. He is survived by three daughters including playback singer Preeti Sagar. His youngest daughter NamitaSagar has been anchoring their TV serial Phulwari Bacchon Ki, which he produced and directed for DDfor the last seven years.
