One held for non-payment of ESI dues

Labour contractor Praveen B Patel, engaged by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai was arrested and detained in the civil jail by the Recovery Officer of Employees8217; State Insurance Corporation for non-payment of ESI dues to the tune of Rs 11,00,000.

Patel was a gardening contractor for BARC and independently covered under ESI Scheme, but he was not complying with the statutory payment of ESI dues. He had appealed to the Employees8217; Insurance Court, but lost the case and evaded arrest since. Following a vigil at his residence, he was recently nabbed.

3-day camp on meditation

New petrol pump at Mulund E

n A new petrol pump will be opened up at Mulund E soon, informed Kirit Somaiya, MLA and president BJP Mumbai, making it the first such facility on the Eastern Express Highway between Mulund, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli.

PWD Minister Nitin Gadkari got the pump sanctioned near the Mulund-Airoli bridge, Somaiya stated. The bridge will be thrown open for vehicles early in 1999.

Employee polls held at varsity

The Maharashtra University Employees8217; Federation held its annual general body meeting at Mumbai university on December 12 to elect its office-bearers for the new year. Following were elected: President B A More, University of Mumbai, vice-president Bhayyasaheb Patil of North Maharashtra University, A B Mane of Shivaji University, General Secretary G L Kulkarni of Pune University,Joint Secretaries Vijay Mete of Amravati University and Satyabodh Kulkarni of SNDT Women8217;s University, and Treasurer Vijay Tambe of SNDT University.

Students hit by teachers8217; stir8217; n The National Students Union of India has requested junior college teachers of the city to withdraw their ongoing strike as students are having to berar the brunt of the strike. The teachers have been on strike since 18 days, and HSC exams are due soon. The NSUI also regretted that the alliance government did not seem interested in solving the issue.
