Fake notes, 1 arrested

MUMBAI, December 27: One person was arrested last night at Ulhasnagar in connection with a fake currency racket.

, when he along with another associate tried to use 100 Re notes.According to police sources, Tulsiram Ejaba and his associate Santosh Pillai, both residents of Navi Mumbai, came to Ulhasnagar to make some purchases. At the marketplace, they bought some vegetables and paid the vendor with a Rs 100 note. Noting the note to be a fake, the vendor Shakuntala Shirsat raised an alarm, the police said.

The duo tried to flee but people gave a chase and managed to nab Tulsiram while Santosh got away. The Vithalwadi police are conducting further investigations i to the case.

Fishermen8217;s protest

The Colaba Koli Jamshetji Bunder Bachav Kruti Samiti has organised programmes to protest the anchoring of the INS Vikrant at Jamshetji Bunder. A long-day hunger strike by the fishermen will held on December 31 between 7.30 am and 7.30 pm, in which some 500 persons areexpected to participate. Nearly 100 fishing vessels will also anchor between 11 am and 8 pm on the same day before the Radio Club displaying protest banners.

Two robberies in Sion hotels

In two separate robberies at Sion, two hotels were robbed of Rs 72,290. According to the police six unidentified persons barged into a country liquor shop, injured a customer Narayan Chavan 32 and looted cash and gold from the customers and the cash counter of the shop worth Rs 22,390. The robbers downed the shutter and fled. In the second incident, seven unidentified persons entered a restaurant and threatened the owner with a revolver and grabbed cash and a mobile worth Rs 49,900, the police said. The injured have been rushed to the Sion hospital.

Gaurav Puraskar for Bhavnani

Social worker Pradeep Bhavnani has been conferred with Sant Ghadge Maharaj Gaurav Puraskar 1998. The cash award of Rs one lakh will be presented to Bhavnani on Sunday at Pune. P M Patil, secretary of the Sant Ghadge MaharajMission which has instituted the award, said that Bhavnani has distributed onions at Rs 5 per kg during Diwali days to the poor and middle class people when the prices in Mumbai market were Rs 50 per kg. Bhavnani is associated with various social organisation, one being Mumbai Youth Association.
