Ex-MLA Desai behind bars

Former Shiv Sena MLA, Gurunath Desai, who was arrested in an extortion case on Tuesday, was discharged from Nanavati Hospital and lodged in the Arthur Road Jail today. Desai was arrested by the Juhu police for allegedly extorting Rs 5 lakh from a shopkeeper to settle a dispute. He was admitted to hospital immediately after his arrest as he complained of chest pain. Since his remand ends on Friday, police will seek a further remand to secure police custody so that they can conduct further investigations, says Additional Commissioner of Police North-West Rakesh Maria.

Thackeray in court today

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray will appear before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A A A Kidwai at 12 noon tomorrow, in response to a contempt petition filed against him by Abu Asim Azmi, city unit president of the Samajwadi Party.

Warrants against Khanna cancelled

A metropolitan court today cancelled nine non-bailable warrants issued againstactor-turned-politician Rajesh Khanna after he gave a written undertaking that he would be present in court at every hearing. The warrants were issued after he failed to appear in court on October 20 in a case of income-tax and wealth-tax evasion.
