Rent Act: SC puts off hearing
The Supreme Court has posted the next hearing on the petition filed by the landlords against the rent act after August 16. The apex court which was to give directions for fixing the next date of hearing today however allowed the landlords to amend their petition and include their demand to challenge the simple extension of the Bombay Rent Act by a year.

The petitions relating to rent act involving the Maharashtra government and the landlords will now be placed before a three-member bench, the Supreme Court said. According to state government officials, the hearing has been put off since the Supreme Court breaks for summer vacation between May 14 to July 14, 1999.

Meanwhile, city tenants8217; groups feel that sine the case may drag on for sometime, the state government is not likely to pass the Maharashtra Rent Act Bill which was tabled on Thursday during the monsoon session. In fact, critics state that the onus of passing the Bill is likely to rest with the newgovernment which takes over after the assembly elections scheduled to be held early next year.

Bajrang Dal disrupts film screening
Bajrang Dal activists forced several theatre owners to postpone indefinitely the screening of a newly released Hindi film Lafda today.

The Dal activists took strong objection to the scene of a nude actor in the film. 8220;Unlike our earlier protests during release of Fire, today our agitation passed off peacefully after theatres like Alankar and Minerva readily agreed with us and suspended their screenings,8221; said a Dal member from Girgaum, R Srinivas.

Srinivas, speaking on behalf of his president Yashwant Shinde, stated that they had mainly objected to a close-up shot of a stark naked actor along with the issue of extra-marital affairs shown in the film.
